Hidden within the river valley of the Glencullen River, near Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow is a small nature reserve. Knocksink Wood National Nature Reserve is small even by Irish standards, only 73 hectares in area and less than a half kilometre wide at its narrowest points. Small is indeed beautiful in this instance as within this reserve lies a wide variety of habitats of great biological diversity and of outstanding beauty. Among these are acid oak woodlands, calcareous birch and hazel woods, freshwater pools and the Glencullen river itself which appears in many disguises from trickle to torrent, winding stream to waterfall. The unique geology of the site allows for diversity unparalleled in North Wicklow. Over a hundred species of flowering wild plants and thousands of different creatures can be found within a distance that can be walked in half an hour.
